“In thinking about primitive life, we often imagine a very crude means of survival. Surprisingly, instead of inferior equipment, almost every creation of primitive people was superior to what is available today. And when you consider the effects on the environment, modern practices don’t compare.”
Michael Sottosanti grew up in a house where living off the land and using primitive technology was the norm. At 19 years of age, he decided to move into the forest and start living off the land.
Today, Michael brings over 35 years of practicing outdoor survival skills to his role as a teacher and river guide. He has taught all aspects of primitive technology to a wide variety of audiences, consulted professionals on historical projects, and led expeditions down the river.
Michael has lived his life along the Shenandoah River including winning many canoe races in his youth. He revels in sharing his inherent love for and knowledge of the natural world with others.
