Return of a Bear
While out hunting one afternoon, I came upon a very large Black bear. I went quickly to find Scott and brought him back to the spot in hopes he could see it too. We went right back to the place where I had last seen it. As we walked over to the spot I had last seen the bear, he stepped out to our right and turned away from us and walked down an open trail away from us. What was amazing is this is where I was hunting only an hour before. I had hid myself on the edge of the trail, but then thought I should go look for my son. As I neared some cover I heard soft footsteps behind me and looked back to see Scott right behind me. We got to follow the bear for quite a while. I do a great deal to hide my scent but I found it hard to believe he didn’t smell me. I had walked up that very trail only an hour ago. I think finally it did smell me, because he paused and then he turned and started back toward us. With too little cover he spotted us trying to hide and turned and left the trail. An awesome finish to a wonderful day.
An Unexpected Night in the Woods
Yesterday, Thanksgiving Day, with snow on the ground I went for a walk in the woods shortly after dark. I was greatly enjoying myself when I encountered the tracks of a hunter who had trespassed earlier in the day. I heard a gun shot and followed the tracks for a while to see if he had gotten a deer.
An Orphan Bear Cub
A few weeks ago I took my wife for a walk up the mountain. Its a place I visit often, but it was the first time anyone in my family had seen it. Shortly after arriving on top of the mountain, I heard a large animal coming down a tree quickly. I assumed I had spooked something, but as this bear cub appeared in the foliage I realized there was another explanation. The little guy was so intent on a hornets nest, it didn’t seem to even notice me.
